A Unique Flavor in a Carnivorous World

New Orleans is full of restaurants that sell meat; however, it is not so easy to find good vegetarian restaurants. Every day, I am tempted by different kinds of meat dishes with various sauces, but I find it hard to resist this temptation because it is so delicious. Thus, I have grown fatter. So when I saw this reputable little vegetarian restaurant, the Green Goddess, I could not stop an overwhelming urge.

It is 10 a.m. when we arrive at French Street. The weather is a little chilly. I shudder as I am not wearing that much. It is a really small restaurant. The dining area is outside on the street and the street is a small alley. Judging from the door, you would have only been aware of the hanging “Green Goddess” sign and failed to even recognize that it was a restaurant. Without entering, you would never even know.

Upon entering the restaurant, you see a wide variety of different alcohol at the bar. It is like a little bar and you would be forgiven for believing that the owner considers alcohol more important than food.

It is a small restaurant and the building seems quite old, but under closer inspection it is clear that the owner cares about its appearance. The walls share the same color as the windows, which are European dome windows, and even the ceiling has been “framed”.

As the owner is so interested in drinks, the cocktails served here obviously display characteristics of the restaurant’s personality. I am attracted by the amusing and unique name of one, “batter”, and feel compelled to order a glass.

“Batter” uses Vodka as its main ingredient alongside cucumber juice, a little lime juice, bitter celery and soda water. A slice of cucumber and black salt is used as decoration. After taking a sip, I feel revitalized.

As I came here for the vegetarian food, I order a beetroot salad as my appetizer.

The salad with toast, carrots, celery, white radish and cucumber was accompanied by a salad dressing made from fresh beetroot and hummus. When tasting the sweet sauce, the fresh taste spread in my mouth and worked to eliminate that oily feeling one gets when eating meat. The beetroot dressing was not too sweet, not like some of the stuff you get in the market. Rather, it had a pure and natural sweetness, which tasted fantastic!

As many people had recommended the tofu here and having not had tofu for a long time, I decided to order it. But I could not see it on the menu. The waiter with a thick moustache noticed my anxiety and recommended that I go to their website to find what I was looking for. Finally I found it.

The sauce on the tofu was a little sweet, which is to my taste. The purple looking food was sticky purple rice, which balances the sweetness of the tofu sauce. And of course the mushroom pasta should not be overlooked, which was tasty and succulent like mushroom soup. I gulfed down this plate of vegetables mixed with pasta and tofu sauce.

After I had finished, I realized that no matter how big a restaurant is the details can still reflect the owner’s love of food. In my opinion, the owner’s care for the restaurant was apparent in the tableware on use. If the owner had not clearly had such a love of fine dining he would not have used such delicate tableware in his restaurant.

While eating I took a glimpse at the food on other diners’ tables and understood that the restaurant’s style is one of making dishes that come across as home cooked. It was really not like eating in a restaurant. It felt more like enjoying food and having a casual chat with your family and friends at home.
